What Are Automatic Transfer Switches?

What Are Automatic Transfer Switches?

Automatic transfer switches are a critical component of any emergency or standby power system. When the normal or preferred source of power is lost, it quickly and safely shifts the load circuit from the normal source of power to the emergency or alternate source of power. Because of this, it permits critical loads to continue running with minimal or no outage.

It also has a re-transfer process that returns the load circuit to the normal power source, when the normal power source has been restored.

It has three basic components.

One, it has a power switching device to shift the load circuits to and from the power source.

Two, it also has a transfer logic controller that monitors the condition of the power sources and provides the control signals to the power switching device.

The third component of automatic transfer switches is the control power source, which supply operational power to the controller and switching device.

What makes this power-switching device different from the manual type of power switching device?

Reliance Controls Transfer Switch Kit 31410Crk What Are Automatic Transfer Switches? With a manual model, you will need to start your generator and connect it to the power-switching device during power outage. Then you will need to switch your house over to generator power. When the utility power is restored, you will need to switch your house back to utility power, and turn off your generator.

Reliance Controls Transfer Switch Kit 31410Crk What Are Automatic Transfer Switches?

However, with the automatic transfer switches, everything is fully automatic. Thus, when the utility power goes out, it will signal your generator to start. Once the generator is running, it automatically connects your home or business to the generator. When the utility power is restored, it will then reconnect your home or business to the utility. Then it turns off your generator and waits patiently for the next power outage.

In buying these devices, you need to remember that when you want to run your entire house in case of a power outage, and you have a large enough generator, you will need a device that is the same rating as your main breaker panel. For a home, this will normally be either 100 or more likely 200 amps.

generator transfer switch

The power-switching device should be installed between your main breaker, which is normally found at the meter, and your main electrical panel. Some homes have a 400 amp service utilizing two distribution panels, in which case you will need two 200 amp or one 400 amp automatic transfer switch.

However, if you want to run only a certain loads during a power outage, you can install a sub panel off your main panel and use a 100-amp power-switching device. This is a great idea if you do not have a generator big enough to run everything. Automatic transfer switches are usually designed for use with a permanently installed standby generator. And they can come with a built in load center that saves space and makes installation easy. It is a device that comes in handy for companies and household that has a generator.

Introducing the Whole House Generator

WHOLE HOUSE GENERATOR

Do you know what a whole house generator is? If you don't, you definitely should. In this article, we shall tell you everything. Let's start by defining it. A whole house generator can give backup electricity for the whole house, during a power crisis or a power outage. They are necessary because no year is complete without its share of blackouts, and since we depend much on electric appliances, we need to have power at all times. A standby generator cannot be used continuously - in fact, it is just meant to be used for short periods. So you need something that will provide you electricity throughout the day. Enter the whole house generator. Their generation capacity is measured in kilowatts, and it's a good idea to install an automatic transfer switch (ATS) also. If the electricity power gets cut off, or if voltage is low, then the ATS would disconnect your house temporarily from the utility grid, and the generator would start working.

So what kind of whole house generator should you opt for? The size depends on how many electric items you would need to operate during a blackout. Usually, a 12-KW generator seems to be enough to meet a typical family's needs. But if you think you can get through without luxuries like air-conditioning, or even hot water baths, for some time - then perhaps a smaller whole house generator would do the trick - and it would cost much less as well. So how do you go about choosing? A good method would be to sum up the wattage of the electric items you think you'll require. However, you should always avoid online watts calculators. When doing calculation, you should take into account the fact that all appliances are unique, so depending on the energy efficiency of each appliance, your results can vary.

A whole house generator can give power to your house even in times of power outage. So you can use essential appliances like the air conditioner, your refrigerator and heater, and even the lights. It works by converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. In residential applications, the AC power generators use small engines to produce this mechanical energy. The spinning shaft of the engine is used to create an alternating magnetic field, through a coil, and this induces electromotive force. When it comes to a whole house generator, you can either choose to buy a portable one, or a stationary one (a standby model).

These run on different fuels like gasoline, natural gas, diesel, and also liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The gasoline portable models are usually quite easy on the pocket, you could get a 3000W set for $300. However, their run time is usually short, and you would have to refill their tanks many times a day, if you're running them continuously at rated load.

The Lowdown on a Standby Generator

What is the difference between a portable generator and a standby generator? The standby unit is capable of powering an entire home. A portable unit can supply power to an appliance and it can be moved around. You cannot move around the unit that is capable of powering an entire house.

3250 Watt Portable Gas Generator The Lowdown on a Standby GeneratorWhen a power outage occurs, the standby generator will start up on its own. These are large devices and are fixed in one place. It looks similar to a large outdoor air conditioning unit. Portable units are much smaller; they are about the size of a regular cooler. A small gas engine also powers them.

The basic difference is that a standby generator will power everything in the house, while a portable generator will power one electrical appliance at a time. Another very important difference is that a professional must install the standby units. This is because they must be connected to a propane or natural gas fuel source. The generator also must be connected to your home's electrical system.

A standby generator must also have a transfer switch installed with a separate electrical panel. This switch allows the power to come on within a few seconds of a power failure. When your regular electricity has been restored, the transfer switch senses this and powers down the generator.

Some generators actually come with software that allows you to check the status of it even if you are not at home. It can also let you know if there is something wrong with the device. This can be very helpful information.

A standby generator requires periodic maintenance just like any other mechanical device. Your operator's manual will provide information on how to do this yourself. Alternatively, there are companies that can do this for you.

You should test your standby generator on a regular basis to make sure the starting battery is still in good shape. It should be charged about once a month. If you do not test it, chances are that it might not work when you need it most.

A 1000 watt generator is ideal for powering small-scale household appliances like computers, laptops, TVs, video cameras and other items that don't demand a lot of power. Another great use for 1000 watt generators is camping. If you love the great outdoors and want to experience nature with just the bare necessities of life, grab one of the pint size power producers. There may be a myriad of other uses, just use your imagination.

BRIGGS & STRATTON G1000M Elite Series Generator 1000 Watt Generators (How to Find a 1000 Watt Generator at a Discount)A Serious Warning About Generators - As great as a generator can be, here's my caveat; don't make the mistake of overloading any generator. The only way to be sure the unit you are contemplating buying can actually handle the device or devices in question is to perform what's called the generator sizing test. This is a rather simple process that will let you know what size generator you will need to safely meet your needs. Unfortunately, an alarming number individuals purchase generators without giving any consideration to how much power they will require.

If you don't perform the generator sizing test, there is the great potential that you could damage your sensitive electronic equipment and/or harm the generator. Don't take that chance. Know your generator's limits and capabilities and know how much power your appliances and devices require. Also note, many manufacturers will automatically void your warranty if they determine that you violated their owner's manual instructions.

There's simply no way you can visit as many retailers and wholesalers driving around burning gas, fighting traffic and vying for the attention of the store's sales reps. By performing your search online, you can visit more stores in one hour than you could in ten hours of drive time.

The first question you must ask yourself as you are searching online is this, "Are they a brick and mortar store with a website?" If the answer is, "Yes!" You are not likely to receive any type of discount worth writing home about. These stores simply cannot afford to give deep discounts unless: (a). That model or line of generators is being discontinued. (b). Someone bought the generator, used it and returned it back to the store. (c) It's a floor model that they want to get rid of to make room for the new inventory.

Before proceeding any further, you can find some great deals on used 1000 watt generators on websites like Craigslist, Amazon.com and other sites that cater to individuals selling their personal equipment. But those are not really true discounts because you are buying used equipment. So essentially, you're paying for what you're getting; which is secondhand equipment. A true discount entails getting a new generator at a deeply discounted price.
